Looking ahead: the future we want to build together
From our volunteer-chosen name to our employment practices, Canadian Connections embodies collaboration. We knew reducing persistent employment barriers for refugee women meant leading by example.
“Thank you for creating pathways for us to contribute.” Words from a staff member capture our collaborative approach perfectly. Our structure tells our story: 2 refugee women now lead programs alongside 9 volunteers, supported by a network of nonprofit and corporate partners.
When refugee women lead, authentic solutions follow
Our 4th anniversary highlights a powerful approach to change how we design community services. When refugees drive services, programs become more effective, culturally appropriate, and community-responsive. When refugee women hold staff positions, they create programs that truly understand community assets. When partnerships multiply resources, impact grows sustainably. Every collaboration strengthens our ability to build a welcoming Canada.
That is the goal of the Women in Action (WIA) program: an iterative, innovative pilot program that breaks through the ‘Canadian Experience’ barrier for refugee women. Organizations gain enhanced programming while women refugees access meaningful career pathways that utilize their skills and experience. Adopting this model ourselves, Canadian Connections proves refugee employment strengthens organizations while creating pathways to empower community members to lead their own solutions.
The needs and barriers for refugees are only increasing.
As the need grows, our services expand. The future we’re building together.
Four years ago, Canadian Connections began with a simple premise: early refugee support is the cornerstone to creating community prosperity. Today, our anniversary coincides with global displacement reaching record levels, and economic pressures and rising operational costs challenge the day-to-day of charities like us.
But every pressure teaches us that connections and collaboration are our greatest strength.
Our 4-year model of strategic early intervention with essential goods (laptops, furniture, grocery cards) and curated navigation support demonstrates that meaningful, low-barrier settlement support is essential to transform refugees’ lives and build stronger communities together. Providing pathways for meaningful careers and leadership enhances and speeds up these effects.
We envision a Canada where your children thrive in school with the laptops they need. Where your families have furniture that makes your house feel like home. Where skills are recognized and immigrants’ contributions are celebrated. Where people give back and make their communities stronger.
August 15th marks our 4 years of building the welcoming Canada we envision together.
