Zakia Hidayat

Zakia Hidayat is an Afghan newcomer who left Afghanistan at the end of 2019 due to security concerns and instability. After a challenging journey, including a two-year stay in Tajikistan, she and her family arrived in Canada in September 2022. They settled in Guelph, where Zakia quickly integrated into the community, becoming an active member and volunteering at June Ave. School in the education department.

In 2024, Zakia joined Canadian Connections, volunteering to support other newcomers. She embraced the challenges of being a newcomer and found her first job opportunity at June Ave. School, where she enjoyed helping the kids. Her second job opportunity came with Canadian Connections, where she began working as an employee in the data entry section, supporting Afghan newcomers.

Zakia holds a bachelor’s degree in law and certification as a defense lawyer from the Afghanistan Independence Bar Association. In Afghanistan, she ran a legal consulting office, dedicated to the struggle for women’s rights. Her work there was a beacon of hope, as she tirelessly supported those facing the toughest challenges.

Her journey from Afghanistan to Canada is a testament to her resilience and determination. Zakia continues to inspire others with her unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Her story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one can make a difference and be a source of hope for others.
